Philoptochos Chapter 1035: Saints Anargyroi at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, Trenton NJ

Spring 2014 News:

  • In June, the Saints Anargyroi Philoptochos Chapter of St. George
Greek Orthodox Church planned a food drive, and donated the food collected from the community to the Mercer Street Friends Organization. The word Philoptochos is a Greek word which means “friend of the poor”.
Delivering the food is Angelina Zimnes and Donna Rose to Brian Peterson Community Resource Liaison from Mercer Street Friends.
The Philoptochos outreach contributes to many local and national organizations.
  • On Thursday March 6th, we held our annual Membership Event with about 60 ladies in attendance and the recruitment of a few new members. The speaker of the evening was Mrs. D.G. Bacas who presented her book “My white clouds”, based on the real life story of her mother and her life in Greece in the early 1900s followed by the family’s immigration to America. It was an evening full of friendship, nostalgia and fellowship. Our special thanks to Mrs. Bacas for honoring us with her visit and to the co-chairwomen of the Membership Tea: Emily Spireas and Evie Georgopoulos.
  • Every year, on the Day of Sunday of Orthodoxy, our Chapter holds a small fundraiser by selling loukoumades. On March 9th, everyone enjoyed the warm, crispy, sweet, Lenten homemade treats while the Philoptochos made a modest profit.
  • April 23rd is the Feast Day of our church’s Patron Saint George, so the parish celebrated the special day beginning the festivities on the previous evening with Great Vespers followed by coffee hour hosted by Philoptochos. On Wednesday, April 23rd following the Divine Liturgy, we hosted the annual luncheon for our Feast Day with plenty of food and desserts for everyone present
Happy Name Day to all named George and Georgia!
  • May 11th is Mothers Day and in our community we honor the Day with the annual “Mother of the Year” award. This award is given to a different woman every year whose life and presence exemplifies the Greek Orthodox Christian way of life. The honoree – selected by the executive Philoptochos Board – is a mother who has not only given her best for her own family, but she has contributed in some way to the children/youth of the community, e.g. through involvement in Sunday School, Greek School, GOYA, PTO, etc. This year’s award goes to Mrs. Katina Angelakis who has taught Greek School, has taught Sunday School and continues to generously contribute to the many youth parish ministries, while being a loving and caring mother of three and grandmother of twelve grandchildren! Congratulations Katina and thank you!
  • As we are getting ready to wrap up the year, we take the opportunity to invite you all to our community’s annual Festival on May 15-18 and to our chapter’s end of the year dinner on June 5th. For more information about the festival and/or the dinner please contact Evie Georgopoulos by email: evie.georgopoulos@comcast.net

Winter 2013/2014 News:

Happy New Year!

On January 12 our Ladies Philoptochos Society of Saints Anargyroi hosted the cutting of the Vasilopitta event for the whole Saint George Parish in Trenton. Like every year, the Priest (Father Demetrios Pavlow) gave Vasilopitta slices to all the presidents of the different organizations of the community and we all had a pleasant afternoon enjoying the delicious Vasilopitta and keeping the tradition alive…

  • During the first weekend of November we held our annual fundraiser “Yiayia’s Kitchen”. We are so proud to share that it was a great success and we sold out of almost everything. Our chapter is looking forward of disbursing the funds to the many charities we support locally and nationally.
  • On November 22nd, we held a special appreciation dinner for Past President Fotini Baba-Floudas who is moving on after a record 10 years of being President! Fotini was one of the youngest Presidents ever to take office in our community, as well as very active and generous with her time and other means. We thank Fotini for the successful 10 years she offered to Saints Anargyroi Philoptochos and we wish her all of God’s Blessings in her new endeavors.
  • Despite the first serious snow storm of the season, our Ladies of Philoptochos held their annual Christmas Luncheon on December 8th. The attendance was a little low because of the weather, but the 30 ladies and family members who attended, enjoyed a beautiful luncheon with Christmas music and warm Holiday atmosphere. A special thank you goes to Emily Spireas for organizing the event and wishes for many more enjoyable events to come! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Fall 2011 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities: In January, along with their statements, we send information about our Philoptochos to all members. This year we included the new membership form provided by the [Metropolis]. The board tries to talk to the ladies of the community during Fellowship Hour, encouraging them to join the organization. In the “Trophybearer”, we advertise the events along with the projects and the funds we gave the previous year to charities. Our membership event (we used to call it Membership Tea), is usually in October prior to our big annual fundraiser Yiayia’s Kitchen, hoping that the new members will come to help in this event too. We are thinking of having another one in late March this year. We have 97 paid members.
Fotini Baba-Flouda, President

The Saints Anargyroi Chapter #1035 of Philoptochos Society is based in the historic community of Saint George in Trenton NJ. Our Chapter was founded in 1930 and continues to this day its very active presence. The Saints Anargyroi Chapter has over 100 members and supports many charitable organizations as well as provides for many needs in Saint George and other communities.

Our main fundraising activity is our annual “Yiayia’s Kitchen” festival where we prepare and sell dishes one may find in an everyday meal in a Greek home. This fundraiser has been taking place for 18 years and has allowed our Chapter to provide the funds for the Pantokrator Icon that adorns our nave’s dome ceiling.

Another ambitious project of our Chapter is the establishment of a Library that focuses on books in the Greek language as well as books on Greek culture and Greek Orthodox themes and interests.

The organizations that are supported from our Chapter are too many to list here and they do change according to need and the availability of funds. The “Home Front” family center, Deborah Hospital, St Jude’s Hospital, Holy Cross-Hellenic College, Saint Basil Academy, National Philoptochos Center for Philanthropy and others, represent the many ways our Chapter spreads God’s Love and Charity.

We look forward to another successful year and we invite all of you to come and see us at this year’s “Yiayia’s Kitchen” on November 18-19.

Fotini Floudas—President

Joanne Kakoyianis—Vice President

Evie Georgopoulos—Vice President
