Philoptochos Chapter 1031: Saint Irene at Saint Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, Paramus NJ

Fall 2011 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities:
Our first attempt with membership drive, is our New Years Ladies Night Out, which is typically within the first 2 weeks of the New Year. We have dinner and dancing (DJ) open to the ladies of our community. Membership form is on the table, and we attempt to recruit at that event. We also attempt recruitment at our annual Vasilopita.

St. Athanasios Church is located in the heart of Bergen County in Paramus, NJ. Our community was founded in Paterson, NJ by immigrants who were drawn to working in the silk industry that thrived there during the turn of the century. Our chapter was founded in 1930’s as the Ommonia Society where we served the social services needs of Greeks in Passaic County. In 1973 our community moved to Paramus, NJ and we renamed our Chapter for St. Irene.

We currently have 32 members who are actively involved in our fundraising and social services efforts. We satisfied membership to St. Michael’s Home “Club 1000” by giving $1000 per year for a 5 year period. We visit St. Michael annually, and continue to support them financially. In addition to St. Michael’s Home, we are active supporters of St. Basil’s Academy and the other institutions of Philoptochos.

We hold two primary fundraisers per year; a fashion show in November and a Tricky Tray in March. We have responded to the immediate needs of families who have lost a loved one or need medical assistance on a regular basis. We are a regular supporter of the Center for Food Action (which is a local food pantry). We have sponsored health-care kits drives for the IOC charities on a regular basis as well. We also assist our parish as needed.
