Fall News 2012:

For our Membership Drive [event], we are having a guest speaker who is an author of the cookbook, Uncomplicated Gourmet. [She] will be cooking the ladies a lite dinner and dessert.

Eleanor Kolovos, President

We opened our calendar year with a wonderful General Meeting in September where we welcomed back our members and set the agenda for the upcoming ecclesiastical year.  This Fall we plan to host the following events:

October 20th – Basile Comedy Night.  We have scheduled an evening with the hysterical Greek-American comedian, Basile.  He will present his routine, “Growing Up Greek in America.”  We will be hosting this event at our Fellowship Hall and will have a cash bar and complimentary appetizers, coffee and desserts.  A social evening of dancing will follow. As always, all proceeds from our events go toward supporting our charitable giving.

November 4th – Artoclasia.  In honor of Sts. Cosmos and Damianos, we will be offering an artoclasia for the Philoptochos.

November 13th – Cooking Demonstration by Nancy Stern, the “Uncomplicated Gourmet.”  Following our General Meeting that night, we will be treated to a cooking demonstration.

Also in November, we will have our annual Food Extravaganza, where you will be able to buy gourmet delights to serve over the holidays.  We will also be sending out information regarding our Annual Christmas Card.

December 5th – St. Nicholas Vespers.  Each year, we are honored to host a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the Vesper Services for St. Nicholas.

December 24th – Egg Nog Reception.  What would Christmas Eve be without congregating with fellow St. Nicholas family members after services for some egg nog, cookies and good cheer?  We have hosted this event for over 25 years, it is an evening not to be missed.

In December, we look forward to celebrating at our annual Christmas Party with the Daughters of Penelope.

January 13th – Vasilopita Sunday.  As part of our National Philoptochos obligation, we host a fund raiser luncheon to assist St. Basil’s Academy.  We serve homemade soups and sandwiches.  It is an opportunity to gather and think of those who need our help.

More events planned for the winter and spring, it is going to be a fun and productive year.  Together, we can do great things.

Spring News 2012:

Christos Anesti!

The Ladies Philoptochos Society of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church in Wyckoff, New Jersey has been busy with Lenten and Easter preparations.  We organized our annual “Koulourakia Bake Sale” which is always well received.  Who doesn’t love traditional Greek cookies, especially over the holidays?

We supported our St. Nicholas Community by coordinating the assembly of the Palm Crosses.  Each year, we solicit the help of our Greek School and Sunday School students in making the many palm crosses needed for the Palm Sunday service.  The children enjoy participating in this tradition and we are grateful to the students and their dedicated teachers for assisting us in this annual endeavor.

For Good Friday, we oversee the decoration of the Epitaphio.  This effort is an opportunity for the entire Philoptochos to come together and assist in the Easter preparations for the church.  As always, it was a very meaningful task.

Perhaps the highlight of the Easter activities is the Easter Egg Hunt which we host after the Agape Service on Easter Sunday.  It is a delight to watch our young St. Nicholas parishioners enjoy the festivities. We have coordinated this activity for over 15 years and it has become a much anticipated activity on our St. Nicholas calendar.

We look forward to using the summer months to plan our Fall calendar.  Looking ahead, we have scheduled an evening with the hysterical Greek-American comedian, Vasilli.  He will present his routine, “Growing Up Greek in America,” on Saturday, October 2oth.  We will be hosting this event at our parish center and will be serving wine, beer and appetizers.  Details about tickets availability will be forthcoming.  All are friends are welcome, we hope to see many of you at this fun night.

Once again, we wish our sister chapters all the best.
