Philoptochos Chapter 1089: Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Virginia Beach VA

Winter 2012/13 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities:
We put a notice in the Church bulletin, have signs in our narthex and social hall, and send a letter to all women of the parish inviting them to join us at our January meeting, which is a luncheon.

Kathy Wilkins, President

For as long as I can remember, our Philoptochos Chapter at St. Nicholas GOC, has participated in the “Angel Tree” program at first and now the Christmas Wish List that is sponsored by the City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services.

This is a program where needy children are given the opportunity to make a wish list for Christmas. We are provided 10 cards for 10 children with their wish list. We then put the 1st name of the child and one of their items on a card, and hang it on a Christmas tree. This year we had 55 items that the 10 children wished for. Our Philoptochos members and our parishioners are then able to pick a card from the tree and shop.

Our program has always been well received by our members and our congregation.

Marshia Maestas
Treasurer and Angel Tree coordinator

Fall 2012 News:

Our Virginia Beach chapter has been extremely busy this year. After our Easter bake sale we went right into a Memorial program for Mothers Day that raised funds that were donated to the Guatemala Orphanage. Another Memorial program for Fathers Day raised money for the Greek Children for school supplies. We are establishing an annual senior luncheon in November that will probably become a quarterly event.

Our biggest project for this year that will fund our many charities, will be our annual bake sale on November 17. This one day event usually grosses approximately $40,000.00 for us. We are extremely proud that this event is making a name for our small parish here at St. Nicholas, in Virginia Beach, Va.

God Bless us all.

Marshia Maestas

By working hard to sponsor our large annual bake sale, we are able to fulfill our National and Metropolis obligations, as well as contribute to many worthy charities. Our ladies start baking in March and continue up to our bake sale in November. Wonderful fellowship and sisterhood is shared during each baking session. Marshia Maestas is our Baking Committee Chairperson and our treasurer. Our other main Board Members consist of Kathy Wilkins (President), Flo Blankenship (Vice President), Angela Mitchell (Recording Secretary), Patsy Michaels (Corresponding Secretary), Athena Roussis and Despina Titsis. Our Philoptochos Society will continue to be an example to our community through our Orthodox faith. We pray God will continue to bless each us this year in our fellowship and sisterhood.
