Philoptochos Chapter 1040: Saint Elpida at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Spring 2013 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities:
We have an annual Philoptochos Membership Tea and invite all women to join us for a light lunch/desserts and of course, tea. We then set up a table for new and renewal sign ups and have a member talk to everyone during coffee hour. For the Tea, we have done different things each year. A speaker or myself present on or from, one of the charities/initiatives we participate in. We have had a rep from Gilda’s Club, from the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and also from the Women’s Shelter. This year I shared with those present, a letter from a seminary student we gave a scholarship to, as well.

Since our last update our Holy Trinity Church has celebrated its 30th Anniversary in November.  During this celebration the St. Elpida ladies we proud to present our parish with 2 icons for the narthex in honor of our beloved Father Demetrios Constantelos and Presvytera Stella Constantelos.  The icons are of Christ the Philanthropist and St. Elpida. Christ the Philanthropist is one of Father’s favorite icons and also key to the mission of Philoptochos.  St. Elpida, being our chapter’s name-saint is a special honor for Presvytera Stella who was a founding member and life-long supporter of Philoptochos.

For December we participated in “Sandy Claus” a program to bring Christmas gifts to families who were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. During the Christmas season we have an annual Angel Tree which provides gifts for persons in need and this year families in Monmouth County were our chosen group.  Due to an overwhelming response, when all requests were filled we then began an second Angel Tree for children whose moms were aided by the Atlantic City Covenant House.  Both of there efforts were met the Christmas Spirit and gave us all the chance to share Christ’s love to those who perhaps felt lost due to their circumstances.

“After the new year we began planning for our Lenten retreat and activities.  The year’s Lenten Retreat featured a Kolyva demonstration and discussion regarding the history behind the tradition of bringing Kolyva to our memorial services.  We also enjoyed a Bible study with Father Costantelos before our luncheon.  The event was well attended and even included some men of the community!  A visit to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission to serve lunch and provide dessert was also part of our initiation into this year’s Lenten season.

As we head into the remaining spring weeks we look forward to celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will be decorating our church with the beautiful flowers of spring and preparing our hearts to celebrate on Resurrection Sunday with all of you! Christ is Risen!

Fall 2012 News:

St. Elpida Chapter in EHT has gotten underway with our Fall activities for fund raising and service.  We began September with an annual Memorial Service for our sister who have fallen asleep in the Lord. October brought participation in the Ocean City Block Party which is one of our larger fund raising activities for the season.  The money raised in this event will help fulfill local and national obligations as well as provide when emergency needs arise. To round off October we are planning a luncheon to honor our past-president Ginny Kramvis.  Ginny served 4 years as our president and through her leadership and heart for our local community we grew to be an active participant in many service projects which directly effected those in the Egg Harbor Township & Atlantic City areas.

The Philoptochos in EHT is also starting to plan a Bone Marrow Drive after the recent appeal from our Metropolis.  We are hoping to get this moving before the season gets ahead of us!  November finds us starting off with our Annual Bid N Buy. The Bid N Buy is our largest event, for which we plan over the whole year. After the Bid N Buy we will be assisting the Noyes Museum in their November 8 event to support the Atlantic City Rescue Mission by providing desserts.  This year November also brings our parish 30th Anniversary!  We will be celebrating the day with a 30th Anniversary Dance.
