Philoptochos Chapter 1020: Ascension Greek Orthodox Church, Fairview, NJ

Winter 2012 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities:
Every year our chapter holds a Membership Dinner at a catering hall which has proven to be successful, having between 60-75 women in attendance. This includes ladies who join that evening. Also, each year there is a different theme. Last year we created a video to be shown during the evening entitled “Thanks for the Memories”, which was a presentation that encompassed the early years of our chapter up to the present time. Truly it was a labor of love for our two Chairladies that leafed through many albums of pictures that we have in our archives, dating back to 1952 when our chapter was established. One other year, we had Diamond from National Philoptochos, who came and spoke about social services, and another year as part of the evening festivities, we had a mini Fur Fashion Show, with our own Philoptochos Sisters participating as models. As you can see, each year we try to include a small event during the evening in addition to speaking about the importance of membership in Philoptochos. Not only does this encourage participation by ladies who are interested in learning more about Philoptochos, but it also keeps the event from becoming “an evening out”. Prior to any membership dinner, we hand out flyers every Sunday at Church and encourage new members to join us by speaking to them, etc. [In addition]our chapter holds cultural movie nights every few months and invites not only individuals from out Church and surrounding parishes, but also invite various Hellenic clubs in the area. We gather 90 people from all different age groups and it gives us another venue to speak about Philoptochos and encourage membership.

Our Chapter is pleased to share information on some of our most recent activities. In December we held our Chapter Christmas Party in our Church Hall. Our Committee Chairs prepared a wonderful dinner and program. There were 50 members present who also brought with them family and friends. Also present was Father Christos Pappas, our Protopresbyter, and Mr. George Hristofidis, our Parish Council President. We sang both Greek and English Christmas Carols with music provided by two of our parishioners. All had a very enjoyable evening of camaraderie and fellowship.

In early January, a group of ladies from our Chapter, along with our Parish Priest and other members of our community, attended the Metropolis Vasilopita. It was wonderful being able to participate in this event that was hosted by our beloved Metropolitan Evangelos. It also gave us the opportunity to see many of our Metropolis sisters and meet parishioners from other Churches.

On January 14th we held our Vasilopita which was attended by 140 individuals comprising members of our parish, our philoptochos, and other church organizations. The younger children from our Greek School entertained us by dancing. They were just wonderful and we are very proud of their accomplishments. Funds from this event will be used to help provide support to St. Basil’s Academy. Once again, hearty congratulations to Mrs. Bessie Anastassatos, our annual Chairlady for this event. She and her committee did a wonderful job.

On February 10th, we will be sponsoring the first of a series of Movie Nights in our Church Hall at 101 Anderson Avenue, Fairview, NJ 07022. Admission is free and the first movie will be a documentary titled: “TRACING ISTANBUL, AGIA SOPHIA & OTHER HISTORICAL MONUMENTS.” This event is open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

On February 19th, the children from Saint Basil’s will come and visit with our Parish as they do every year. Our GOYA hosts a luncheon for them and our Philoptochos distributes gifts to each child that are donated either by our parishioners or philoptochos members. We look forward to this upcoming event.

Currently, we are planning our APOKRIATIKO GLENDI, to be held in our Community Center on February 25th and our Membership Dinner to be held the second week of March.

Fall 2011 News:

The Ascension Greek Orthodox Church in Fairview, New Jersey has been the home to our Ladies Philoptochos Society for many years and, we currently have 106 members. Many of these dedicated women have been serving our Chapter since its inception in 1972.

We hold several events annually which help us raise the funds for our national and metropolis obligations and which also provide enough revenues to assist our Church and the needy. Some of these fundraising activities include: Cake sales, our Annual Flea Market held every June, our Vasilopita Dinner every January for which the net proceeds are given to assist St. Basil’s Academy; our Chinese Auction; and for the past two years we have had Dinner and Musical Entertainment evenings. Our Major fundraising event is held every October and this year we will be hosting a Dinner and Fashion Show for which all net proceeds will support our charitable endeavors.

In addition to the events listed above, our Ladies Philoptochos Chapter assists with our Coffee Hour after Church every Sunday. Some of the members have also helped with the preparations and hosting of a luncheon for seniors from St. Michael’s Home for the Aged in Yonkers, NY who have visited our Parish twice in the past two years. Also on our agenda annually, is support of our Church Festival and other Church and community events where our membership is always ready to give a hand.

Last year as part of our Membership Drive we held a dinner and mini fur fashion show which was very well attended and proved to be an enjoyable evening for all. This event brought 3 new members to our Chapter.

We look forward to working together again this year and finding new and innovate ways to promote charitable endeavors in support of Philoptochos.
