Philoptochos Chapter 1042: Agia Magdalene at Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church, Flemington, NJ

Fall 2012 News:

Membership Recruitment Activities:
A letter is mailed to the entire parish mailing list which briefly introduces the Philoptochos, encourages anyone 18 years or older to join and any who qualify to be an Associate member, it provides our contact information (email and website) identifies the Membership Committee contacts, includes the Philoptochos Mission statement and Section 2 of the By Laws that identifies Members Qualifications (both of which are located on the reverse side of the letter). At the bottom of the letter is a small form asking for their contact information, and we give several options for them to check off to personalize their membership based on their needs ( e.g. do they want to receive emails or they may like to indicate that they are 18 years of age (attending college and would like to take advantage of our reduced membership rate of $22 (which covers the National and Metropolis Commitments only) and a few other options). Also, enclosed with this letter is a list of areas (Ministries and duties) that we anticipate for the year and ask that each prospect let us know in which area they would like to be contacted to assist or be involved and we offer a blank line for any new ideas. The main letter also invites all to attend the Vasilopita Celebration, which kicks off our Membership Drive. We host and prepare the Vasilopita Celebration for the parish, we do not charge for the food but rather have a Tray Collection in place for the Proceeds to Benefit St Basil Academy, (we include contact information and a brief description of St. Basil Academy in our Bulletin and Father announces this as well) as we don’t have the facilities in place to host a luncheon, but we are on our way!!! Every membership is presented a gift. This year a 100% recyclable tote bag which includes our calendar for the year, a detail description for each committee/fundraiser/Ministry, a list of all the areas we supported in the prior year/ where we send our funds raised and a breakdown of how the membership dues of $30 gets distributed. A small write up of our Patron Saint, Agia Magdalene and this year we ordered pins of Sts Cosmas and Damianos and included a write up of these great Saints as well. Every Sunday we stand in our “Corner” accepting membership and answering any questions to further personalize each membership. Please note: we have removed “Ladies” from our title to help encourage men to join and have dedicated this year as “Philanthropy is for Everyone… A Family Affair” Also, we are offering free membership to anyone who is computer savvy and can help with either flyers, the website or QuickBooks.

On September 29, 2012 our chapter honored our Past Presidents, Stacie Hiras (2003-2007) and Anastasia Vlahakes (2007-2012) for their dedication to our philanthropic mission set forth since the 1930′s by National Philoptochos. The luncheon consisted of dishes prepared from recipes that will be found in our very own cookbook. To our delight the ladies put their best forward and produced delicious dishes that inspired us to go out and find more of these successful recipes. It truly has been a labor of love getting this cookbook together. Several ladies expressed how happy they were to be apart, not only of the cookbook, but our parish and how very proud they are of our chapter. So, our hats off to both Past Presidents for having established the foundation for our chapter to attempt such endeavors and reach many heights!

Christos Anesti!!

Called To Extend Our Hands in Love

”… for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me….. Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to Me.”   Matthew 25:35-36, 40

We began our fundraising with our 2nd Annual Apokriatiko Glendi and Talent Show held on February 10, 2012, at the Three Bridges School, which proved to be a continued success!

We raised funds through the Go Red program and the all proceeds went to American Heart Association.

While on our coarse we hosted our first Spaghetti Dinner, we gathered as a family, breaking bread and  giving  to the least of these as the proceeds from the Spaghetti Dinner went to aide the Crisis In Greece, a National Appeal set forth by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America

As we entered the Blessed Journey of Holy Lent, we offered for the first time, Koliva preparation service (the boiled and sweetened wheat berries for memorial services), for the Saturday of Souls.

The Paschal Flower Committee is worked  diligently providing all the necessary church decorations to make this Lenten Journey truly come alive.

As we stay the coarse set forth by National Philoptochos and applying our time, talent and treasures we are growing and are bestowed a great responsibility, which was  especially highlighted during the Lenten period,  that is, the extending of our hands to those in need.

As our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ extended His hands to Adam and Eve pulling them from Hades, we too extend our hands with love to those who may be down spiritually, emotionally, socially and even financially.

Many thanks to all members, our parish and the local community for your support!

On Behalf of the Philoptochos Board and Members, we would like to express our gratitude to Father Anastasios Kousoulas for his spiritual guidance.

Winter 2012 News:

Happy New Year!

It is with great honor that we congratulate and thank all the honorees, of this year’s Agape Luncheon, for over fifty years of their devotion to philanthropy including a  special heartfelt thank you to our very own, Helen Kehayes.   Helen has stood by our chapter, caring for us and guiding us and continues to serve our board today.  God bless you all, for you serve as an inspiration to our young and flourishing chapter.

Many of our members are young women with families and in today’s fast paced society you can imagine, time being so precious to all, we put a diligent effort towards the structuring and putting into practice committees for our chapter.  This has served to make supporting our philanthropic missions a joyfilled service and its end product one that will serve many now and more in the future.  It is with this structuring and team work that we have been able to promote friendships at the same time raise funds, to support our community, fulfill our obligations and commitments at an increasing rate.

We have worked along side with our Parish Council in updating our website, so please visit us at and let us know what you think, at our new email address

We started the year with our Vasilopita Celebration.  It was a wonderful expression of the fellowship and the love our community shares.  It also served in bolstering our Membership Drive, as this year we transitioned to a calendar year.  The ladies serving our chapter have already sensed the reward that comes with a happy heart in service.  Many new ladies have joined our chapter and we credit this to our patron Saint, Agia Magdalene who herself serves as an example to us, of such grateful service to the work of Christ.

In fulfilling another of our philanthropic missions promoting fellowship for the entire family, on February 10th, we will be sponsoring our 2nd Annual Apokriatiko Glendi and Talent Show.  It has proven to be a night of family fun, filled with singing, dancing, and art exhibits from our very talented community.  For details you can contact us at

Wishing you all the best for a Great Lenten Journey!

Fall 2011 News:

Xronia Polla!

Our chapter has been the right hand of our St Anna parish for several years, accomplishing many goals and fulfilling the several functions as are expected of a Philoptochos. We received our chapter recognition in May of 2011.   It was through the dedication and perseverance of Anastasia Vlahakes, our former President, that this feat was accomplished.  Through this recognition and provision our charter has added responsibilities and adherence to rules that have been set forth by the National Philoptochos.  I humbly report that with the spiritual guidance of both Father George Nikas these past six years and now Father Anastasios Kousoulas, we have started strong and united.  Our chapter is well on its way to meeting many more objectives of the Philoptochos.

Historical Event:          St Anna Groundbreaking Ceremony with Agiasmos Service, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos, held Saturday September 17, 2011.

Save the Date:              St Anna parish will be honoring the V.Rev.Archimandrite George Nikas, our  former spiritual leader, on November 12, 2011.
